Caged-up Heart

defense mechanisms
meant to protect
to keep from hurt
limiting possibilities

arms-length relationships
letting no one in
hoping not to be
     let down
     let go
     disappointed

a key kept
on a chain
reserved for someone
yet no one
ever gets to see
the caged-up heart

Audrey, ntmarketing, and Frank, thank you all! My best friend thought God had caged our hearts to protect them. She asked me to write a poem about a caged-up heart. It took only a few moments, and this is what came out. I asked her if she'd ever looked at it this way: not as a "good" protection, but a self-coping mechanism to keep herself from more pain. She was moved to tears as she'd never thought of it like this. I'm glad you also liked it as well; thank you all for your kind words!

Isolation is the product of unmet expectations we keep in our relationships...if those expectations are not satisfied then we get hurt, so as to protect our heart from further damage our mind seals our heart...imprisoning our feelings within...great poem...

I find it interesting that there are almost as many words in the tags as the work. An abundance of words from one knowledgeable about caged up hearts.

Yes, raciniwa, I have to agree with you that the hurt we receive in relationships causes us to put up walls to try and protect us from further hurt. Sometimes though, we can put up these walls and miss out in furthering our relationships with others or creating new ones. Thank you for your insightful comment and for stopping in to read my poem!

Wow, mckbirdbks,I had not even noticed the number of tags or words in my poem were in any way related; you are very observant! I am, fortunately, learning to break the pattern of enforced walls of protection; I have found they can keep me from people and experiences I might otherwise have missed. It is better to risk pain, and have had emotions, than to not feel and have a hard heart. Thank you for you very insightful and observ ant comment!

This has to be the most economic yet powerful poem I have read in a while. Beautiful! Have a peace filled day! Love!

Thank you so much, shimmering Dawn; I'm so glad you liked it. My friend was very moved when she read it. I believe we shouldn't let ourselves be walked on, but we need to be careful to not let ourselves be so protective we don't give Life and Love a chance. I like to think if it hurts then it means you've cared. Thank you for your inspiring comments and encouragement. Peace and Love to you as well!

Timetowrite , Your name says it all!

From behind these castle walls

emerges a princess

Locked away for far too long

and only to find

the door was never locked

and the lock

never keyed

Thank you, ahorseback; you are so kind;I love your the poem comment! I wrote this one for a friend who thought keeping her heart caged was a good thing. Her perspective change when she read this! What she thought was God's way of helping her protect herself she found wasn't doing anything other than keep her from letting anyone close. I'll share your poem here with her. Thank you!

Yes, ahorseback, I know too, for I spent some time there myself. I have fought against the urge to go back there to that place due to recent events in my own life. I will definitely share the well wishes from you and the other hubbers with her;she will be deeply touched: thank you :-)
